.cb WHY THE ENVIRONMENTALISTS WILL BE SORRY IF THEY PASS PROPOSITION 15
The exhaustion of American oil and natural gas which supply 70
percent of our energy will cause a severe energy crisis - the last one
was mild. To minimize this crisis requires a real Project Independence,
but unfortunately environmentalist political strength has forced
policy in the opposite direction, so that other sources of energy than
oil and natural gas will give even less energy in the 1980s than was
expected before 1973. A few weeks ago, for the first time, the U.S.
imported more than half the oil it consumed.
When the crisis comes, the environmental movement will be found
guilty of having deceived the public, they will lose all their political
power, and most of their idols will be smashed. We may even see
the Santa Cruz Mountains logged for firewood.
WHAT ENERGY DO WE NEED FOR THE LIFE-STYLE WE WANT?
Life-style should be a matter of choice, and most Americans will
choose one involving a high energy consumption. Those who prefer a
low energy consumption life-style are at liberty to persuade others
to follow their example, but if they succumb to the temptation of
imposing a low energy life-style by scaring people into voting for
Proposition 15, they will pay dearly for it later when all their
idols are smashed in reaction to the crisis they will cause. We can
afford high energy consumption and still have good safety and a good
environment with extensive use of nuclear energy.
